Smells like mastic!

The dentelated coastlines in combination with the pine-tree forests, the vineyards, the orchards and the famous mastic-trees that spread their scent around the narrow streets of the fortified medieval villages with the unusual architectural style, create an image of unspoken beauty. Throughout the years, Chios became an object of desire for many a people, including the Romans, the Genovese and the Turks. It was an important commercial center during the Middle Ages and the byzantine monasteries that still remain on the island have silently witnessed a long and turbulent history. There were many important literary personalities born on this island, including Adamadios Korais, Giannis Psicharis, Neofitos Vamvas, Emanouil Roidis, Georgios Souris, Labros Porfiras and Giorgos Theotokas. According to tradition, Chios was also the birthplace of the epic poet Homer. The famous neoclassical country houses of Kampos surrounded by intricate walls made of local stone exude a natural elegance, reminiscent of times gone by. During the springtime, the verdant valleys of Kampos brimming with wild tulips (locally known as lalades) and lemon blossoms create an intoxicating atmosphere, guaranteed to make you fall in love with this beautiful island once and for all!
