It’s the most impressive medieval village in the whole island, leaving tourists speechless with the characteristic patterns carved in the façade of its stone houses. The genovese influence in the construction of the houses that face one another, the domes used as extra rooms (locally known as skepasta), the narrow streets and the watch-towers, is quite evident. The streets of Pirgi are a total labyrinth, leading visitors to unique buildings decorated with ornate designs, an explosion of geometrical patterns carved with forks. Only the local craftsmen could ever produce such a masterpiece. Crossing endless mazy streets, you will finally come upon the central square with a multitude of shops and the church of Kimisi tis Theotokou (Dormition of the Virgin), built in the 17th century. The strings of cherry tomatoes hanging from the balconies add a touch of color, creating a perfectly harmonious effect against the white-and-gray walls. |

| Worth seeing |
•The byzantine church of Agioi Apostoli, dating back to the 13th century, with notable murals decorating its interior. •The ruins of the medieval tower that lent its name to the village (Pirgi is Greek for tower) •The ruins of an ancient citadel from the Geometric Age. •The church of Kimisi tis Theotokou (Dormition of the Virgin) with the beautiful engravings decorating its stone façade. |

| Where to swim |
•At Eborio, near the edge of the gulf of Kalamoti, where part of an ancient city was discovered, identified as ancient Lefkona. •At Mavra Volia and at Foki, two of the most popular and well-known beaches in Chios. The beach of Mavra Volia (Black Pebbles) was named after its shiny black pebbles, a product of the now inactive volcano of Psaronas. |
