| Mesta |
It has about 400 residents and it is located on the southwestern side of the island, 35km away from the capital.
Mesta is another medieval village, 10km northwest of Pirgi, full of gray stone-built houses, narrow streets, arches and pretty little squares. The central one is always full of people during the summer months. The settlement of Mesta has been deemed preservable thanks to its unique architecture, and all the houses are being renovated in traditional style, which makes the whole place look like an open-air museum. |

| Worth seeing |
•The basilica of Megalos Taxiarchis, the largest church in the whole island, built over an old castle in the middle of the village. •The last few traces of the archaic temple of Faneos Apollo, 13km to the south near the sea. •The church of Paleos Taxiarchis, in a narrow alley near the central square of Mesta. It boasts a unique woodcut icon screen, which is supposed to be over 150 years old. In order to visit this church you must seek out the church-warden first, who holds the double role of key-master and guide. |
