| Chios (capital) |
It has about 22.000 residents and it is located on the east side of the island. It’s the capital, as well as the port of Chios.
Chora is built in the middle of the eastern coast, and it’s the capital, as well as the port of the island. It is nowadays considered to be the administrative, commercial, historical and cultural center of the mastic island. A brief walk around the city is enough to capture your heart forever. The contemporary city was built in the same spot as the old one, which was completely destroyed after the 1822 slaughter and the destructive earthquake that followed in 1881. The architecture of the administration headquarters was clearly influenced by the Genovese, an influence especially visible in Kampos, a regular monument to genovese architecture! Chios and Genoa are still considered fraternal cities. |

| Worth seeing |
•The Vounakiou square with the beautiful Municipal gardens, the statue of Konstantinos Kanaris made in 1922 by Michalis Tobros, the old stone-built water fountain and the mosque that now houses the Byzantine Museum. •Kastro, at the far edge of the city, dating back to the 9th century. It’s a fortifying wall surrounding 16th century houses built by the Turks and the Genovese. This is where the Justiani Mansion is located, now functioning as a museum. Life inside the Kastro follows a different pace, reminiscent of times gone by. •The Byzantine Museum on the south side of the square, housed in an old turkish mosque. •The Archaeological Museum boasting findings from the late Neolithic Age, such as earthenware jars, jewelry, coins etc. •The Korais Library, one of the biggest provincial libraries in the country, boasting over 95.000 books. The Pinakothiki (Art Gallery) and the Argedis Folklore Museum are housed in the same building as well. •Kampos, 6km south of Chora, full of brilliantly green orchards. This village is very popular with tourists but it still manages to preserve its unique charm. The genovese influence in the architecture of the manor-houses in quite obvious. |
