Vourliotes

It has about 650 residents and it is located on the north side of the island, 20km away from Vathi.

It was first inhabited by immigrants from Asia Minor. It is located in the middle of a brilliantly green landscape and it produces more wine than any other village in the island. Vourliotes has quite a few sites worth visiting, such as the little country church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John), the Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Vrodiani and the Kastro (Castle) of Lazaros (a medieval settlement).

Worth seeing

• The Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Vrodiani, one of the oldest monasteries in the island dating back to 1476. It was severely damaged in a devastating fire in the year 2000. The monastery church boasts a unique wooden icon-screen as well as a silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary.
• The Pnaka spring, just before the village of Vourliotes. Take a load off and relax in a brilliantly green environment full of plane-trees and running waters. There’s a picturesque little tavern in the area, where you can try local delicacies and good quality wine.
