It has about 100 residents and it is located on the south side of the island, 10km away from Pythagorio.
Ireo is a picturesque coastal settlement next to the homonymous sanctuary, featuring a sandy beach that has become a bit of a tourist attraction lately.
 
Worth seeing
• Ireo, an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Hera, the mother of all gods. According to tradition, Hera was born in Samos where she was worshiped in a string of temples - the oldest one dating back to the 8th century B.C. It was 108.75m long, 54.68m wide and 25m tall. It boasted 133 columns, but unfortunately only one of them is still standing. The sanctuaries’ sculpted décor is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Pythagorio. You will also have the chance to admire an ancient aqueduct.
• Iera Odos (Sacred Street), a 4.800-meter-long street that connected the ancient city with the sanctuary of Ireo. It was constructed in the 7th century B.C. and it was decorated with 2.000 sculptures and several temples.
