It has about 2500 residents and it is located on the eastern side of the island, 21km away from Vathi.

The village was named after some former residents of Mytilini who fled to the island when Lesvos was struck by a destructive earthquake. It is one of the biggest villages in Samos, boasting a brilliantly green landscape, running waters and ravines, but mostly famous for what is probably the most important Paleontological Museum in Greece. It is housed in a modern building and it features several important findings, such as fossil bones from prehistoric vertebrates, small three-toed horses, rhinos, a local type of giraffe called samothirio and other kinds of horned animals. The most important exhibit of the museum is the petrified brain of a small three-toed horse that’s over 12.000.000 years old.
