| Kisamos - Kasteli |
It has about 3.000 residents and it is located on the northwestern side of the prefecture, 40km away from Chania.
It was named after the local Venetian castle. The village runs down a long beach but the city plan is not especially well though out. The roman Kisamos was located here as well. Archaeological research has uncovered brilliant edifices dating back to the period of the Roman domination, e.g. baths, mansions, works of art and masterly mosaic floors, made in the 2nd or the 3rd century A.D. The ancient Polirinia, built in the 6th century B.C., lies 7km south of Kisamos and its houses used to be chiseled in the rocks. |

| Worth seeing |
• The Falasarna, one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, near a valley overrun with olive groves and hothouses. There’s not much of a tourist infrastructure but the immense natural beauty of the place attracts many visitors, even just for day trips. The ruins of the ancient Falasarna are nearby as well: you can see the ancient harbor that’s now a just few meters above the water, due to a rare geological phenomenon. The eastern edge of the island is slowly sinking, while the western edge is rising. • The village of Sfinari, with a very popular beach. |
