| Worth seeing |
| • The area where the ancient Aptera was located in the village of Megala Chorafia. It was named after Artemis (also called Aptera) the locals’ goddess of choice. There’s another version of the story attributing the name to the sirens, who plucked the feathers of their wings before they drowned in the sea of Souda. It used to be one of the most powerful cities in Crete, an especially well-developed commercial and financial center. The walls surrounding Souda were erected during the Hellenistic period. On the eastern side of the wall there’s a Turkish fortress called Itzedin, offering a panoramic view of the city. |
