| Hiking through the 18km-long canyon of Samaria (National Park) is definitely going to be one of the high points of your vacation and part of what makes summers in Chania so unique. The adventure starts in the plateau of Omalos (1050 above sea-level). The shelters of the Cretan revolutionaries were hidden away somewhere amongst the tall mountaintops and the rough untrodden paths of the area. The path that leads to the canyon begins in Xiloskalo, further down south. You might come across several rear species of birds as you’re hiking along, while the mountainsides are frequented by the famous kri-kri goats. The end of your hike will bring you to Agia Roumeli, a coastal settlement with crystal clear waters, built where the ancient city of Troy used to be located. |
