Polygiros (capital) |

Poligiros is the capital of Halkidiki Prefecture. The rich town of Poligiros, capital of Halkidiki, counts about 5000 permanent residents and it is located in the mainland of this area and built on the south foothills of Mt. Holomontas. Poligiros is the business and trade center of Halkidiki Prefecture. In the heart of Halkidiki Prefecture, 69 km south to Salonica, lies its capital, Polygyros. Its houses spread out amphitheatrically on the south foothills of Mt. Holomontas. The surrounding area is very fertile, full of vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees. Its tops seem to compete one another lending a sense of an uplift to the landscape. Poligiros is built close to Apollonia which is located 6 km from the town. It is said that the name "Poligyros" of the modern city comes from a sanctuary of Polieros Apollo found in the area. In the past, Poligiros was the trade centre of Halkidiki Prefecture as the products were transferred up to Constantinople and Trieste. |

Worth seeing |
• The Archaeological Museum (Tel.No.: 23710 22148), where any sculptures, pots and historical evidence from many towns of Halkidiki are exhibited. • The small countryside chapel of Profitis Ilias at a realy captivating site. • Tsoukalas: It is the east peak of Mt. Holomontas, that is called "the Balcony of Halkidiki". Just below the peak and next to the road there is a spring with cool water. The view from the peak is magnificent, you can see the three peninsulas, all of south Halkidiki and Kalamaria. |
