It has about 1100 residents and it is located on the west side of the island, 76km away from Mytilini.
It lies 36km to the west of Kaloni and it is considered one of the most important villages in the island, formerly known as Telonia. It owes its contemporary name to the ancient city of Antissa that used to stretch along the shores, north of where the village is now located. It was destroyed by the Romans in 168 A.D and according to greek mythology, Orpheus’ head and beloved lyre were washed out on the beach of ancient Antissa after he was murdered by the Maenads. Ancient Antissa also used to be home of the lyrical poet and musician Terpandros.
