It has about 3500 residents and it is located on the south side of the island, 40km away from Mytilini.

It used to be the most important commercial center of the island (a multitude of abandoned factories still bear witnesses to its past glory) and it is now famous all over the country for its delicious ouzo (white spirit drink). It was founded in 1842 by the inhabitants of the old Plomari (Megalochori), built 600m above sea level. It is a coastal village with a very functional street plan, vast green spaces (dominated by olive trees) and old yet well-reserved manor houses that charm visitors straight away.
